orange county beach guide: corona del mar, newport beach, and huntington beach

Three of Orange County's best beaches, where to set up, where to shop locally, and what to bring for a perfect SoCal beach day.

Orange County's coastline is one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in California. And if you live anywhere near Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, or Huntington Beach, you already know that a good beach day comes down to timing, location, and gear.

This guide covers the three beaches we know best. We're based here, our products are sold in local shops here, and these are the beaches where we spend our own weekends. Here's what you need to know.

Corona Del Mar (CDM)

Best for: Calm water, tide pools, families, and a relaxed afternoon on the sand.

Corona Del Mar sits just south of the Newport Harbor entrance. Big Corona is the main beach, protected by the harbor jetty, which keeps the water calmer than most Southern California beaches. The sand is soft, the views are wide open, and the crowd tends to skew toward families and locals who know what they're doing.

Little Corona, a short walk south, is smaller and rockier. At low tide, the tide pools are worth exploring, and the snorkeling is surprisingly good for a beach you can drive to in 10 minutes.

Local tip: Street parking fills up fast on summer weekends. The main lot at Big Corona has limited spots, so arrive before 9am or plan to walk a few blocks. A backpack beach chair makes the walk from the car painless since your hands stay free for coolers and kids.

Where to grab gear nearby: Ace Hardware in Corona Del Mar (on East Coast Highway) carries SUN'Y beach chairs, towels, and accessories. It's a quick stop on your way to the beach.

Newport Beach

Best for: Long beach walks, pier-side people-watching, and classic California surf culture.

Newport Beach stretches for miles along the Balboa Peninsula. The pier area is the hub, with food, shops, and a steady stream of surfers and bodyboarders. Head south toward The Wedge if you want to watch experienced bodysurfers take on some serious waves (not for beginners). Head north past the pier for more space and a quieter setup.

The bay side of the peninsula is calmer and great for paddleboarding, especially on weekday mornings before the boat traffic picks up.

Local tip: Park near 15th Street or further south on the peninsula for fewer crowds. The blocks around the pier get packed by mid-morning. Bring a portable beach umbrella because shade is nonexistent on the open sand.

Where to grab gear nearby: 15th Street Surf Shop is right in the neighborhood and stocks SUN'Y products. Ace Hardware on West Cliff Drive in Newport Beach also carries our full lineup. Both are easy stops before you hit the sand.

Huntington Beach (Surf City USA)

Best for: Surfing, bonfires, long boardwalk runs, and all-day beach sessions.

Huntington Beach is the most "classic California beach" experience you'll find in Orange County. The pier is iconic, the waves are consistent, and the beach is wide enough that even on busy days you can find space. The paved boardwalk runs for miles and is great for biking, running, or just walking with a coffee.

The fire pits near the pier are a huge draw for sunset bonfires, but they go fast. If you're planning an evening session, send someone early to claim one.

Local tip: Summer weekends mean big crowds and limited parking near the pier. The lots south of Beach Boulevard tend to have more availability. Lay out a Beach Collection Huntington towel to rep Surf City properly.

Where to grab gear nearby: Ace Hardware in Huntington Beach carries SUN'Y beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. Grab what you need on the way and skip the overpriced rental spots near the pier.

What to Bring: Your Orange County Beach Packing List

SoCal beach days can stretch from morning to sunset if you come prepared. Here's what makes a real difference:

  • Backpack Beach Chair - Parking in OC often means a long walk to the sand. A chair you can carry on your back with a built-in cup holder keeps everything in one trip. The SUN'Y ESCAPES chair weighs 7.5 lbs.
  • Portable Beach Umbrella - The California sun feels mild until you've been in it for three hours. Our sand-anchored umbrella stays put even when the afternoon wind kicks in.
  • Sand-Free Beach Towel - OC's fine sand gets into everything. A sand-free towel shakes clean in seconds. Our Huntington, Laguna, and Newport beach collection towels are designed for these exact beaches.
  • Bottle & Speaker Holder - Clips onto your beach chair so your drink and speaker aren't sitting in the sand.
  • Beach Chair Pouch - Phone, keys, sunscreen, all within arm's reach. Available as a half pouch or full pouch.
